How does Brain Retraining Work for Autism?
EEG’s illustrating the brainwaves of children with autism center around the slow moving Delta and Theta brainwaves (1-8 Hz or cycles per second). One of the classic brainwave symptoms of autism is a slowing in the frontal lobes of the brain, similar to that of ADHD, although more severe. Dominance of these brainwave patterns can contribute to a feeling of ‘disconnection’ from others.
In contrast, a calm, but highly focused brain generates levels of Beta waves in the range of 14 to 18 Hz. Sessions that create more Beta wave activity show the child how it feels to pay attention and be more alert. Brain retraining for autism has the goals of teaching the various parts of the brain to work together in a more coordinated way, to make them function as a team instead of individual players. The goal is to lay down new neural pathways that will lead to changes in focus and attention span, better social interaction, and improved appetite and sleep.
Autism affects children to varying degrees. Each child has their own strengths and weaknesses. For some it is purely social and communication, but for many children with autistic spectrum disorder there are difficulties with hand skills, movement skills, attention, concentration, behavior and sensory processing. Your NeuroAdvantage™ Coach will work with you to develop a tailored program that will assist with your child’s specific difficulties.
Eleven studies involving over 500 people have been conducted using LSN to improve mental concentration and focus.Click Here to read an annotated bibliography of this research.
Summarizing across studies, researchers found that LSN treatment:
- Increased sustained attention
- Improved impulse control
- Improved essential learning skills including:
- Auditory Memory
- Mental processing speed
- Verbal and non-verbal IQ
- Improved academic performance; and
- Maintained the treatment gains made in IQ and ability to sustain attention for up to 16-months following treatment termination.
NeuroAdvantage Programs for Autism
NeuroAdvantage™ offers a number of light & sound neurotherapy (LSN) programs designed to improve mental concentration and focus in children and adolescents. These LSN programs are particularly helpful in treatment centers since they reinforce 12 to 18 Hz SMR/Beta brainwave patterns that foster calm and focused attention. The programs are most effective when done in the morning.
For maximum effect, use the NeuroAdvantage™ Trainer with the programs we have designed to improve mental concentration, memory and focus. Your NeuroAdvantage Coach will work with you to determine the most effective programs and schedules for your child.
We have also developed the audio programs for mental concentration, memory and focus. These programs can be used with the Trainer, or by themselves.
